Why does Janie’s grandmother encourage her to get married so young?
Nanny catches Janies kissing a boy over the gate of their home, and becomes afraid that Janie's sexual awakening would lead her astray from the path of education that she had once envisioned for Janie. She is afraid that Janie will meet a similar fate like Leafy and herself, and wishes to secure protection for Janie in the form of a husband before she passes. Logan Killicks is a relatively wealthy man who has his own land and home, and so Nanny believes that Janie can live out the rest of her life in ease and comfort, something that both she and Leafy could never get.
