The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Characters Analysis
Dorothy
She is an orphan living in Kansas with her adoptive parents, Uncle Henry and Aunt Em. She travels to Oz due to a cyclone and accidentally kills the Witch of the East upon landing in Oz. In her attempts to return to Kansas, Dorothy has many adventures with the companions she meets along her journey. She travels all across Oz, kills the Wicked Witch of the West, discovers the reality of the Wizard of Oz, and finally travels back to Kansas with the help of Glinda, the Good Witch of the South.
The Scarecrow
Dorothy encounters him on the way to Emerald City, and he is the first companion to journey with her to Emerald City. The Scarecrow was created only a day old when Dorothy discovered him and brought him down from the pole. He believes that he is unable to scare away the crows from eating the crops because he lacks a brain. He wishes to travel to Emerald City to ask the Wizard to grant him brains. He later ends up becoming the ruler of Emerald City.
The Tin Woodman
The second to join Dorothys group, the Scarecrow and Dorothy discover the Tin Woodman rusted still in the forest, they oil his joints and he expresses his desire to travel with them to secure for himself a heart. He used to be a man of flesh, but due to the intervention of the Wicked Witch of the East, he ends up with a body of tin. He wishes to secure for himself the heart so that he may marry the Munchkin woman he had loved as a man. By the end of the adventure, the Tin Woodman becomes the ruler of the Winkies in the west.
The Cowardly Lion
The last to join Dorothys company of friends. He attacks the group and nearly eats Toto, Dorothy’s tiny dog. The Lion believes himself to be a coward and travels to Emerald City to ask the Wizard of Oz for courage. He becomes the king of a grand old forest in the southern part of Oz after he kills a gigantic spider that terrorised the resident animals.
The Wizard of Oz
The Wizard of Oz is a "humbug" who accidentally landed in Oz much like Dorothy. He was a ventriloquist and a balloonist from Omaha and when he lost control of his balloon the wind carried him to Oz. The people of Oz believe him to be a sorcerer of immense power and he uses their belief to create for himself a position of power. He falsely promises to fulfil the wishes of Dorothy and her companions after they have killed the Wicked Witch of the West. Dorothy and her companions discover his secret, and he attempts to help them. He even builds a balloon so that he and Dorothy may leave Oz together but Dorothy fails to get on the balloon and so the wizard disappears in the clouds forever.
The Wicked Witch of the West
The last remaining Wicked Witch in Oz after Dorothy kills the Wicked Witch of the East. The Wicked Witch of the West had enslaved the Winkies and ruled cruelly over them. She possessed the Golden Cap that summoned the Winged Monkeys and she used it to enslave the Winkies, drive out Oz from the western part of Oz and capture Dorothy. She was afraid of both the dark and water, and accidentally melted away after an enraged Dorothy splashed a bucket of water on her.
