The Sun Also Rises Chapter 14
Jake returns to his room. He is very drunk. He goes to bed but leaves the light on to read, and because, it is revealed, Jake has a fear of the dark. He overhears Robert parting ways with Brett at her door, then later hears Brett and Mike in their room, talking and laughing. Jake tries to sleep but finds it difficult.
The mention is made of the town preparing for the upcoming fiesta. Things are quiet, sort of a calm-before-the-storm foreshadowing.
Analysis
Jake ruminates about various things, as he is unable to sleep. He considers the concept of equal exchange but then disregards it as a silly notion. He wishes that Mike would not bully Robert, but then admits to himself that he takes a certain pleasure in watching Robert be tormented. This leads him to question what morality is.
He also passes judgment on his friends, as he weighs each regarding whether they are a good drunk or a bad drunk.
