S. E. Hinton Book summary

Susan Eloise Hinton was born on the 22nd of July, 1948, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, exactly where this novel is based. Susan began her writing career when she was still in high school. She was motivated to write her first book, The Outsiders, in high school out of a desire to read stories that were realistic and reflective of her own experience as a teenager. Her first book was published when she was nineteen years old, and it was an instant success. SE Hinton is often credited with creating the genre of Young Adult fiction, which developed rapidly during the 20th and 21st centuries. Susan was awarded the title of the “Voice of the Youth,” for giving voice to the younger segments of our society in a rapidly changing world.

Susan struggled with terrible writer’s block for a long duration after writing her first book. Her boyfriend, and later husband, aided her in overcoming the block by only taking her out after she had written at least two pages worth of material. Susan went on to write several other popular books like Rumble Fish, and Tex, but none of them were as successful as The Outsiders. The book was adapted into an extremely popular film adaption in 1983, which featured several Hollywood stars like Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, and Ralph Macchio.
