That is for the reader to interpret. There is evidence to indicate that Gatsby was as committed to the idea of “winning” as he was to that of being specifically with Daisy.  

Again, a question to be pondered by the reader. As evidenced by her behavior, she is a shallow woman, motivated by a hunger for status and wealth, and while Gatsby may have felt a very strong connection to her many years ago, her longing for him may not have held as much depth.

This is an attitude that evolved for Nick over the course of the story. Nick starts out knowing very little about Gatsby. This evolves into curiosity, pity, respect (although fleeting), and a degree of loyalty, especially in defending his humanity after his death. While Nick may not have necessarily respected Gatsby, the fact that Nick is an ethical and moral man who claims Gatsby as a friend indicates at least some respect.
