This quote is extracted from the beginning of the discourse between Krishna and Arjun. After Arjun has refused to fight his kinsmen, Krishna first seeks to provoke Arjun into action by calling out his actions as cowardice. This was an established practiced between the noble warrior and his charioteer, but Arjun refuses to be provoked. He claims that killing his clansmen was worse than death itself. Krishna then begins to deliver the Bhagavad Gita, and first refers to the transient nature of life and death. He explains to Arjun that the Spirit or Jiva in man could never be destroyed, and that it merely moves from one body to the next.

Krishna tells Arjun that he is the creator, as well as the destroyer of all worlds. The things of creation come from him, and upon destruction return to him. He says so to help Arjun understand the Supreme position that Krishna occupies in the order of the world.

Krishna describes the oneness that pervades all things, since he is the source of all creation, all of the creation dwells in him. Those that gain the wisdom of Sankhya, and acquire the vision of the Eternal, can glimpse the interconnectedness of all beings and things.
