The Alchemist Characters Analysis
Santiago -
He is the protagonist of the Alchemist, and the reader follows his journey as he attempts to realize his Personal Legend. Santiago leaves his study as a priest to become a shepherd so that he can travel. He leaves Spain for Africa after he has a recurring dream about a hidden treasure at the Pyramids of Egypt.
Melchizedek -
He introduces himself as the king of Salem and demands a tenth of his sheep in return for giving him guidance in pursuit of his Personal Legend. He tells Santiago that he appears to all those who are in danger of abandoning their Personal Legend. He teaches Santiago about omens, the universal language, and the soul of the world.
The Crystal Merchant -
The merchant has faced a thirty-year slump in his commerce, and he hires Santiago after he has been robbed in Tangiers. Santiago helps the merchant and revive his business, while the merchant aids Santiago in firming his resolve to continue his journey towards finding the hidden treasure.
The Englishman -
He is pursuing his own Personal legend, and happens to be traveling in the same caravan as Santiago. They bond over their understanding of Personal Legends, the role of Omens, and the soul of the world. The Englishman wishes to apprentice himself to the Alchemist living at the oasis, and he helps Santiago learn about Alchemy.
Fatima -
Santiago meets her at the oasis, as he and the Englishman are searching for the Alchemist. Santiago falls in love with her on their very first meeting and is tempted to abandon his Personal Legend to be with her.
The Alchemist -
He is referred to as the most powerful one by the people of the oasis. He meets Santiago after he has read the signs of an attack on the oasis in the flight of the falcons. He tests Santiago to ensure he is worthy and helps him achieve his Personal Legend. He escorts Santiago through the desert and guides him in listening to and understanding his heart. He pushes Santiago to master the universal language when he forces him to turn into the wind.
