Gulliver's Travels Characters Analysis

Lemuel Gulliver -

He is the protagonist of the novel, which is written like a typical travelogue of the time. Gulliver becomes a surgeon through study and apprenticeship but he is unable enough and his son turns to sea travel. In his sea voyages, Gulliver sees the most incredible things and visits the different kinds of people of both size and intelligence.

The Emperor of Lilliput -

The emperor of Lilliput is at first depicted as a mild and clever monarch, but his ambition causes a schism in his relationship with Gulliver. Gulliver manages to escape from a fatal conspiracy at court by going to the nation of Blefuscu, but the Emperor endeavors to have him captured there.

The Farmer -

Gulliver is taken in by the Farmer after he gets left behind in the kingdom of giants. The farmer is at first very gentle with Gulliver but eventually, he begins to make Gulliver perform a circus act, contrary to his well-being. The farmer finally sells Gulliver to the queen, who also takes into her service the Farmer's daughter.

Glumdaclitch -

The farmer's daughter forms an immensely affectionate bond with Gulliver, and occupies the place of his caretaker. She protects him from several mishappenings and continues to take care of him even after Gulliver is taken into the service of the royal family. Gulliver is deeply saddened to leave behind his little nurse but cares little for all the others that he had spent time with.

The King of Laputa -

The king of Laputa is a man consumed with thoughts of celestial bodies, complex geometry, and music. Gulliver once heard the king play musical instruments with the other courtiers, and claimed that they made an incredible racket.

The Houyhnhnm Master -

Houyhnhnm is the horse-like animal that governs Houyhnhnmland and has tamed the race of yahoos. Gulliver spends his time on that island as a servant to his Houyhnhnm master, who treats Gulliver fairly and teaches him the way of their life. Gulliver forms an intense bond with him and is deeply troubled when he is asked to leave.
