Pam Muñoz Ryan, born on Christmas Day in 1951, is a celebrated author in the realm of children’s and young adult literature. Her roots trace back to Mexico, with influences from Basque, Italian, and Oklahoman cultures. Before embarking on her writing journey, Ryan served as an early childhood educator and directed an early childhood program. She later pursued a master’s degree in Post-Secondary Education, which sparked her interest in writing. Initially, she authored books on child development for adults.

Her literary journey truly took off when she started crafting stories for children. With over forty books to her name, including picture books, early readers, and novels for middle-grade and young adults, her work is extensive and diverse. Some of her notable works include “Esperanza Rising”, “Echo”, “Riding Freedom”, “Paint the Wind”, and “The Dreamer”. Ryan’s contributions to literature have been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the NEA’s Human and Civil Rights Award, the Virginia Hamilton Literary Award for multicultural literature, and the Ludington Award. In 2018, she was the U.S. nominee for the International Hans Christian Andersen Award.
