Plot Summary

This is a futuristic tale set in a dystopian Chicago, divided into five groups: Abnegation, Candor, Amity, Dauntless, and Erudite. Our narrator, Beatrice Prior, a 16-year-old from Abnegation, is at the center of the story. The story begins with Beatrice’s mother cutting her hair, a prelude to the aptitude test that will determine Beatrice’s faction. Beatrice is torn between staying with her family in Abnegation, a faction that values selflessness, or joining Dauntless, a group that prizes bravery.

After the test, administered by Tori from Dauntless, Beatrice learns she is Divergent, suited for multiple factions. Tori warns her to keep this a secret. Beatrice is left confused and hides her divergent identity and her feelings about the factions from her family. At the Choosing Ceremony, Beatrice’s brother Caleb shocks everyone by choosing Erudite. Beatrice, after some hesitation, chooses Dauntless. She meets Christina and Will on the train to the Dauntless compound and befriends them. She changes her name to Tris upon arriving at the Dauntless Headquarters where she impresses the rest of the initiates with her nerves of steel. Tris meets Eric, the harsh head trainer, and learns about the three-stage initiation process. She excels on the first day and gets a tattoo of three birds to symbolize her family. The initiates are then made to fight each other. Tris is bullied by Peter and doubts her place in Dauntless. During a game of Capture the Flag, Tris develops feelings for Four and leads her team to victory. The next day, Tris takes Al’s place in a knife-throwing exercise and gets nicked in the ear by Four.

Peter, Molly, and Drew continue to bully Tris. After they humiliate her, she retaliates by defeating Molly in a fight. Tris’s mother visits on Visiting Day, but the occasion is spoiled by accusations against Tris’s old faction, Abnegation, that are leveled against Tris’s mother by family members of the other initiates. Her mother advises her to have Caleb research the simulation serum, hinting at her own Dauntless past. Despite ranking sixth, Tris faces jealousy from Peter, who ranks second. In the second initiation stage, the initiates face a fear simulation. Tris excels, escaping faster than anyone else. She also learns that her Divergent abilities can lead her to be killed and that they offer her an advantage in the simulations. She learns that she must guard the secret of her divergence with her life. To demonstrate the level of the threat, Tori reveals that her brother was killed for being Divergent.

Tris’s success leads to threats from Peter. One night, she overhears Eric discussing Divergent rebels and is attacked by Peter, Drew, and Al. Four rescues her, and they grow closer. Al’s apology for his part in the attack is rejected by Tris, leading him to take his own life. Tris vents her anger about Dauntless’s twisted values to Four, who warns her to be careful. In the final initiation stage, the initiates face their fears in a simulation. Tris joins Four in his fear simulation, discovering he fears his father, Marcus, and remembers that she had heard rumors about Marcus being abusive to his son, Tobias since Marcus was one of the leaders of Abnegation. After helping him through his fears, they share a kiss.

The next day, Tris is upset when Tobias ignores her. During a fear scenario, she panics and gets scolded by Tobias. She leaves Dauntless to visit Caleb in Erudite, who pledges loyalty to Erudite, angering Tris. She meets Jeanine, the Erudite leader, and lies about her test results, the ones that Tobias had deleted to prevent anyone from discovering that she had Divergent abilities. Back at Dauntless, she and Tobias pretend she left because he rejected her. In the final test, Tris realizes she needs control to escape her fears. She excels in the test and is congratulated by Eric, who injects her with a tracking serum. She suspects Erudite will use the devices to control Dauntless in their plans to overthrow Abnegation.

Tris wakes up to find everyone leaving in a trance. She and Tobias, who are also awake and unaffected by the serum, follow the group to Abnegation, where the Dauntless start shooting. Tris is shot and taken to Jeanine, who injects Tobias with a serum that she has prepared specifically for Divergent people, and she makes him attack Tris.

Tris wakes up in a water-filled box, saved by her mother who is later killed. Tris escapes, killing Will in the process. She finds her family and leads them to the control room at Dauntless headquarters. Her father dies helping her. She finds Tobias, still under Jeanine’s control, at the computer. After a struggle, he recognizes her and stops the program. They escape with the hard drive, wondering what the future holds for them and their crumbling society.
