The above quote is the description Cora receives of Darl’s response when he is told that he needs to go with Jewel for Vernon’s errand. The author uses different narrators to effectively highlight the subjectivity of circumstances. This section is preceded by Darl’s own narrative section in which he makes no pleading request to be left with his mother. In fact, Darl repeatedly reminds his father about the three dollars that they would make for the errand.
