Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Characters Analysis
Alice - Alice is the protagonist of the novel. She is believed to be aged seven years old, given the information that she is seven and a half in the sequel, Through the Looking Glass. Alice dreams of a fantastical world called Wonderland, which is filled with talking animals and cards. She journeys through Wonderland while repeatedly changing size, and attempts to make sense of the "mad" world.
Dinah - Alice's pet cat is named Dinah, and Alice seems to be very fond of her. Dinah never appears in the book, yet she is perhaps represented in the form of the disappearing smiling cat called the Cheshire Cat. Alice mentions Dinah several times while talking to the animals, who often flee at the descriptions of the fearsome feline.
The Rabbit - The White Rabbit serves as Alice's guide into the world of Wonderland. He is rushing to meet with the Duchess when Alice catches sight of him, but he is delayed because he drops his fan and kid gloves in fear. He later returns in search of them and sends Alice to find a replacement when he mistakes her for his servant. Alice then gets trapped in the Rabbit's home, and later meets him during Croquet. The white rabbit functions as a herald during the trial of the Knave of Hearts.
Hatter - First introduced by the Cheshire Cat who asks Alice to choose between a path to the Hatter's house or to the house of the March Hare. Alice chooses to go see the March Hare but finds the Hatter having tea. The Hatter is an expert at creating nonsense phrases, and confusing Alice. He is presented as a witness in the trial, but the king's cross-questioning makes him so nervous that he takes a bite out of his teacup rather than the buttered bread in his hand.
Queen of Hearts - The Queen of Hearts is the ruler of Wonderland and is depicted as a large card, featuring an imposing woman with a red face and a crown of hearts on her head. She has a quick temper and loves to order the execution of people who disobeys or anger her. She collects all the important characters of Wonderland for a game of croquet but ends up ordering the execution of everyone who gets in her way or makes a mistake. She is somewhat childlike and has a whimsical side which means that she is easily flattered or distracted. She never follows up on her orders of execution, and none of the creatures are ever truly beheaded upon her orders.
Alice's Sister - She is not given a name in the story and is only ever referred to as "Alice's sister." She is described as her older sister, and their dynamic is characterized as a relationship between an adult and a child. She is depicted to be a sensible adult and as such is often seen reading a book or knitting while Alice is off on her adventures in Wonderland. She does not actively participate in the events of the story, but her presence serves as a contrast to Alice's wild imagination and fantastical experiences.
