A Midsummer Night's Dream Characters Analysis
Theseus
He is the duke of Athens and the fiance to Hippolyta. Egeus approaches him with the problem of Hermia and Lysander. And it is Theseus who rules in the end that Demetrius should wed Helena, while Lysander should marry Hermia.
Hippolyta
She is the queen of the Amazons who had previously battled Theseus and had been wounded by him, before their betrothal. Near the end, she begins to believe the fantastical tale of the lovers' adventure in the forest.
Egeus
A nobleman of Athens, who is the father of Hermia. He wishes for Hermia to marry Demetrius and rejects her relationship with Lysander.
Hermia
She is the daughter of Egeus, and loves Lysander. She is threatened with death, or celibacy in case she chooses not to honor her father's wishes in regards to her marriage.
Lysander
He loves Hermia and is loved by her in return, he concocts the plant to elope with Hermia at night so that they may wed outside of Athens.
Demetrius
He is Egeus's favored choice as the match to his daughter Hermia. He had earlier been in a relationship with Helena but had then left her to pursue Hermia.
Helena
She is the jilted lover of Demetrius, she discloses Hermia and Lysander's plan to Demetrius in the hope of winning him over in the forest.
Bottom
He is the most exuberant member of the workmen's company that puts up the play of Pyramus and Thisbe for the duke and his newly married wife. His head is transformed into that of an ass by the mischievous sprite, Puck.
Oberon
Titania
The queen of fairies who comes to Athens to bless the union of Theseus, and she encounters her husband, Oberon. She is in conflict with him over the custody of a small Indian boy.
Puck
He is the mischievous fairy that serves the court of Oberon, and it is he who mistakenly uses the love potion on Lysander instead of Demetrius. He also transforms Bottom's head into that of an ass as a prank.
