ASE Certified Mechanics

The problem I am investigating is the need of ASE certification to work at a mechanic shop. ASE stands for the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. It's a non profit organization that works to improve the quality of automotive repair, and service. The problem relevance to some mechanics is that they have many skills, and experiences to work on automotive, but they do not have the ability to do well on paper. The problem with the ASE certification is that the test is on paper instead of working in person hands on! It is important because most mechanic shops ask for a certification, and that’s not to make sure that the person knows how to work on vehicle, but to make sure that the person applying is able to have health insurance for shop incidents. There are nine tests prior to the certification. Some of the requirements to be an automotive service technician are to pass one or more tests, and have two years of experience in a hands on work field. The problem is that there are no mechanic shops that will hire if the person is not certified. So, how is the person supposed to have the two years of experience?

Most mechanic shops are family owned businesses. In that case, the people who work there are family members. If an accident happened in the shop to any employee that does not have a certification to work in a shop, then the employer will be responsible for the health bills. This is because the employer hired someone who was not certified as an automotive service technician to work.
