· Discussion Week 2 Question 1
Based on what you learned from the assigned readings/multimedia this week, answer the following questions. Feel free to include your own thoughts, but remember to be respectful of your fellow learners and their beliefs.
I wrote the following for LIB320 in January 2018
President Trump has stated that he would negotiate bi-lateral trade deals; but not multi-lateral ones like the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
Originally, the TPP included the United States, Brunei, Canada, Australia, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam but Mr. Trump pulled out of it just after he was elected President. It seemed the deal was dead.
In November 2017 Trump visited Asia and attended the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. . One of his objectives was to “convince Asian markets to do business with the United States, even if he is ending sweeping trade deals like the Trans-Pacific Partnership."(https://www.cnn.com/2017/11/14/politics/donald-trump-asia-trip-takeaways/index.html (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. ). In other words, he would deal with countries individually.
The original members decided to move forward without the US. What is now called the Comprehensive & Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. (CPTPP) includes all but one original member: The United States. The core elements of the deal were agreed upon during the Summit. It should be signed in March 2018.
Here is a short (and relatively unbiased) summary of the issues surrounding the original TPP:
Last week, Trump asked his top trade and economic advisers to review the TPP (now TPP-11), thinking IF the US could strike a "substantially better" agreement he would reconsider joining. This shift seems to be coming after farmers in the mid-west have voiced their concern over tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to China (https://www.cnn.com/2018/04/12/politics/trump-tpp-reconsidering/index.html).

Feel free to do additional research. Be sure and cite. What do you think? Should the US be allowed to rejoin the TPP-11? Why or why not?

Discussion 2 Question 2
The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was enacted in the 1990s by President Clinton. Soon after he became president, Mr. Trump decided he wanted to end it. Here’s a quick history lesson.
Meetings to renegotiate (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. NAFTA began in late January 2018, but they seem to stall, begin and stall again.
Although Canada, Mexico and the US seem optimistic, an agreement seems far from close
There have been seven rounds of discussions. Negotiators are entering the last round, called the 'permanent round" saying they will stick with it until they have a deal.
What would you advise each of the three countries to do to resolve this?
Based on TPP and NAFTA, plus what you've learned this week are multi-lateral trade agreements a good idea? Why or why not?
You might need to do some additional background research. As always, remember to cite your sources
