ASSIGNMENT 1: NEURODEVELOPMENTAL AND NEUROCOGNITIVE DISORDERS

Mental health disorders can affect individuals across the entire human lifespan, from early childhood through the final stages of life. Conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, and Alzheimer’s disease highlight the diverse ways psychological challenges can emerge at different ages.

For this Assignment, you will examine one of the mental health disorders commonly diagnosed in pediatric or elderly populations. Given the unique vulnerabilities of these populations, you will also consider how you can leverage Walden’s mission of positive social change in the mental health field.

Submit a 600- to 1,000-word paper in which you:

Identify and briefly describe the disorder you selected from one of the following categories, and explain the DSM-5 clinical criteria needed to meet the diagnosis: Disorders commonly diagnosed during childhood and adolescence (e.g., autism, ADD/ADHD) or Disorders common to older populations (e.g., Alzheimer’s disease, vascular disease) Describe one medication-based treatment for the disorder you selected, and compare the efficacy of the treatment approach with at least one limitation. Describe one non-medication treatment for the disorder you selected, and compare the success of this treatment approach with at least one limitation. Identify and describe one feature of Walden’s mission of positive social change that you think applies to working in the mental health field, and explain how that feature could be applied to working with clients who have been diagnosed with the disorder you selected.

Note: The content of the DSM is not static and evolves over time as our understanding of mental health disorders deepens. Each update of the DSM reflects advances in research and changes in society.
