Name: Jane Doe HLTH 2105: Introduction to Research Methods and Analysis Week 5 Discussion Question – Data Collection Proposal Research Topic: Childhood Obesity Problem Statement: Will providing school breakfasts reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity in one elementary charter school? I will collect information for my research using descriptive statistical analysis of quantitative data. The overall obesity rate of the school will be measured at the start of the school breakfast program, before the winter break, at the end of the first school year, at the beginning of the next school year, before the next winter break, and at the end of the second school year. BMI is the standard measure of obesity. This would consist of the height and weight of each student. Because I will be looking at the overall rate of obesity in the school, I will not track changes in individual students’ height and weight. I will only track the overall rate of obesity. The BMI will be compared to the nationally recognized growth charts for age and sex. Any BMI above the 95 percentile of comparable age and gender is considered obese. Only the nominal data of obese or not obese will be used. Because my research design uses the interrupted time series design, I will use the analysis of variance (ANOVA) statistical method. The population of interest is 500 children in kindergarten to 5th grade. All students will be provided the school breakfast program, but I may have some students that have not consented to participate. The sample will be all students who have consented to participate. This type of sampling would be considered a nonprobability, convenience sample.
