Ten Steps to a Successful Op-Ed Piece

(adapted from Wilcox)

1. Keep it short. An op-ed is a short (usually 400-750 words) article that helps establish an individual or organization as an opinion leader.

2. Demonstrate that you are both passionate and well-informed about a newsworthy topic. A successful op-ed will present a clear point of view about a news event, governmental policy or social issue.

3. Focus on one idea or theme. Start strong by explaining it at the top and then elaborate on it.

4. Know your target audience and write specifically to it.

5. As always, start by researching and writing three key messages that support your main idea.

6. Use the 80/20 rule. In this case, that means an op-ed should contain about 20% opinion and about 80% facts.

7. Keep it simple with short, clear sentences.

8. Use numbers to substantiate your point of view.

9. Write in the journalistic third person.

10. Use active verbs.
