Superman and Batman: Symbols of the Hopes and Fears within Humanity

In popular culture, Superman and Batman represent two very different kinds of superheroes who

inspire the hearts and minds of fans everywhere. Although Superman and Batman have slightly similar

origin stories, the effect on each of their personalities and the superheroes they eventually become is very

different. First, Superman survives the death of his parents and entire planet at an age when he is too

young to remember and be scarred by his experiences. Then, Superman’s upbringing within the safe,

small town of Smallville allows him to form long lasting connections with the people he interacts with

every day. Finally, Superman’s choice of patriotic costume colours of red and blue and familial symbols

illustrates his true essence and positive vision of himself and the world. Unlike Superman, Batman is old

enough to remember his parents and has haunting memories of them being murdered in front of him. In

contrast to Superman’s small town life, Batman grows up in Gotham, a large, crime ridden city full of

strangers amongst whom he has few long lasting or meaningful connections. Unlike Superman, Batman’s

choice of an almost entirely black costume mirrors the darkness within him and his negative vision of

himself and the world. Ultimately, Superman represents the hopes of humanity while Batman represents

the fears of humanity.

First, Superman survives the death of his parents and entire planet at an age when he is too young

to remember and be scarred by his experiences. As a baby, Superman comes from a dying world with no

real memories of his parents. However, Superman is brought up by loving adoptive parents and integrated

within the community as a normal human being, Clark Kent. For instance, Clark goes to public school,

makes friends, dates, and eventually goes off to Metropolis to follow his dreams of working as a reporter.

Superman manages to have a happy, loving life without the scarring memories of the destruction of his

world before he comes to Earth. Ultimately, Superman’s upbringing fills him with hope in the goodness

of humanity.

Then, Superman’s upbringing within the safe, small town of Smallville allows him to form long

lasting connections with the people he interacts with every day….

Finally, Superman’s choice of patriotic costume colours of red and blue and familial symbols

illustrates his true essence and positive vision of himself and the world….

Unlike Superman, Batman is old enough to remember his parents and has memories of them

being murdered in front of him. He can never really escape this traumatic event as he loses his innocence

and sense of security in one bloody night. As Bruce Wayne, a billionaire, Batman is raised by a loving

butler Alfred, but is never integrated within the larger community as a normal human being. Bruce grows

up isolated on a large estate, ends up working for his own company, and does not seem able to form

relationships with anyone besides Alfred. Unlike Clark Kent who is part of his community, Bruce Wayne

is always distant from the ordinary people around him and scarred by the memories of the life he lost.

Thus, their similar but differing origin stories causes Superman to grow up believing in the best of

humanity while Batman grows up believing in the worst of humanity.

In contrast to Superman’s small town life, Batman grows up in Gotham, a large, crime ridden city

full of strangers amongst whom he has few long lasting or meaningful connections….

Unlike Superman, Batman’s choice of an almost entirely black costume mirrors the darkness

within him and his negative vision of himself and the world….

In conclusion….
