Roller Coaster Physics By: Jaiden Jones

ppt/slides/slide2.xml

What physics are used on rollercoasters? Potential energy that is converted into kinetic energy gravitational potential energy – the energy it possesses due to its height. Inertia g-forces (a measure of acceleration) centripetal acceleration 11/14/2023 Sample Footer Text 2

How a rollercoaster operates Roller coasters carts have no engine or power source of their own, so it relies on energy. 1. The cart is pulled up the lift hill by a motor and builds potential energy as it reaches the top. 2. The cart reaches the top of the incline where the potential energy is peak. 3. The carts are dropped off the incline where gravity pushes it downward, and the potential energy is converted into kinetic energy. 4. While the carts are accelerating, they’re building momentum to carry them down the track whilst if it tilts up it decelerates. 5. As for loops the energy that they’ve built up overtime pulls it to the top of the loop and gravity pulls it down the loop. 6. By the end of the ride the all the kinetic energy that the coaster has built up has run out and the ride comes to a stop. 11/14/2023 Sample Footer Text 3

4 Rollercoaster going up lift hill (increasing potential energy) Rollercoaster going downhill (converting potential energy into kinetic energy) Rollercoaster going in a loop (using momentum and gravity to complete the loop)

Why roller coasters can-do upside-down loops without the passengers falling out? Riders on a rollercoaster don’t fall out when looping and spinning because of inertia keeps you from falling out. When going around a turn, loop, or even spinning the centripetal force helps keep you in your seat. Inertia is the force that presses your body to the outside of the coaster as it spins and loops. Inertia is a resistance against a change in direction. It keeps you pressed against the bottom of the coaster with a force stronger than gravity. 11/14/2023 Sample Footer Text 5

How Rollercoasters Stay On Track Like passengers the coaster itself is being kept on the track by gravity G ravity pulls down on the cars and its riders with a constant force, whether they move uphill, downhill, or through a loop. The steel tracks, together with gravity, provide the centripetal force needed to keep the cars on the arching path as they move through the loop and down the track. Roller coasters also use side friction wheels that connect to either the inside or outside of the rails which keep the rides centered on the track avoiding derailment. Even without being attached to the rails a coaster could stay on the track while looping as long as it is moving fast enough. 11/14/2023 Sample Footer Text 7

Conclusion Based on the research that this assignment motivated me to find I have a clearer understanding of how physics work on a roller coaster. Since I’ve educated myself on this topic it’s likely that I’ll always think of the science behind the things happening while on a roller coaster. Even though I’ve dove deep into the topic I’m sure there is more to learn about the science and thought put into making a roller coaster an experience for the riders and the bystanders. 11/14/2023 Sample Footer Text 8
