Q42 Now that the study is complete, we can tell you what we're doing. This study is designed to

see if action scenes from movies are as effective as other ways of inducing anxiety in terms of

making people desire information about a controversial political issue. (We told you we'd be

asking you about the video later just to make sure you paid attention to it.) As such, we weren't

really interested in your opinions about immigration--we were interested to see how much

information you wanted before you provided them.

If you experienced a calming video or paragraph before the survey, or you had no video or

paragraph at all, the paragraph above might be a little confusing. But all it means is that the

computer randomly assigned you to one of our comparison groups.

This research is important because if movies that aren't political affect our politics through our

emotions, it would mean that almost everything we watch could have political consequences,

even (maybe especially) if we think of it as "just entertainment."
