Longhorn Newsletter

The Longhorn Newsletter is a designed booklet that is sent to each household if the student is

enrolled at a Cedar Hill campus. The newsletter can also be picked up at the administration

building or available to download on the district’s website for easier access to the public.

The newsletter provides information about Cedar Hill Independent School District as a whole,

advertising accomplishments, a letter from the Superintendent, soaring students at various

schools throughout the district and also promoting the high school level of sports. The magazine

advertises the companies/restaurants that are in sponsor with CHISD.

The Longhorn Newsletter is a good source of reading to stay involved of what is going on

throughout the district. The only downfall that the newsletter lacks it is distributed out monthly

and there are important events that occur each day.

In closing, the only recommendation I would like to implement is that when they highlight

students they should separate them from grade level and campus. The magazine is a great source

of having everyone involved because it touches basis on everyone; the schools, parents, students,

learning styles, athletics and so much more.

CHISD Email

The automatic email system is formed to send out important that is based on things happen

suddenly. The e-mails also indicate a weekly reminder of events that may be occurring. The

email system is only for parents and district employees who sign up for them.

Technology continues to grow rapidly so it is a good insight to have emails sent put

because the notification can easily pop up on your phone or computer.

The purpose of the email is to remind subscribers of upcoming events or some last-minute

information, such as bus routes being delayed or weather advisory for opening or closing of a

campus.

The weakness of the email system is that it should expand more, CHISD should have each

school to have their own email announcements. CHISD also has a phone system that calls when

students are absent and about campus delays because of weather. E-mails are also a proper

representation that the information was sent because of the time stamp of the sending and where

it was sent from.

If I was to implement anything regarding the e-mail system, it would be that all

students and their parents are sent out daily e-mails about their designated campus and district.

The reason for this is to show that everyone can be informed without one party being left out the

loop because sometimes a parent may not believe the child without proof or documentation.

CHISD Facebook Page

Cedar Hill Independent School District is designed by the social media part of getting

information out to the public. The Facebook page can access by anyone by logging on the

website page: www.facebook.com/CedarHilISD

School designated Facebook pages have a unique way of upholding and showing

respect to their school or district. When creating a Facebook page, it is imperative that whoever

is running it makes sure that it’s a page where positivity and education is being advertised. The

page is very reliable and up to date with their postings. The page represents all schools and

resources throughout the community, it doesn’t show favor over one campus or team. Facebook

is also a good source of how alumni and future Longhorn students can look to see what Cedar

Hill ISD is working towards and how they are succeeding in today’s present time. The best thing

about Facebook it allows the viewers to watch videos and commercials about things. For

example, when getting ready for STAR week there was a pep rally the week before to pump and

motivate students so when students feel discourage they can always go back to the Facebook

page to receive motivation at any time.

However, since social media is constantly changing but we log on every day, I would

recommend that the district’s page would post motivational or encouraging quotes each morning.

It is always a great idea to try to keep parents and students motivated to ensure that education is

the primary instinct. The Facebook page is dedicated to making a positive outlook on whoever

may come across their page. A good impression can always go a long way.

Student Flyers at W.S. Permenter

In middle school it is the era of time where students find out what they do or don’t like.

With being a permanent substitute teacher, I see that students don’t really take the time out to

read the handouts. For example, students may read the paper and then throw it in the trash

because they feel as though they don’t need it. The teacher usually must repeat and verbally say

what the flyer or handout is mainly about since students don’t take the time to process what they

are being given. Teachers should adapt to their students and information is retained better when

it is explained in full detail. The documents that students may receive is a project check-list,

flyer about a field trip or a school supply list.

In defense, paper is getting expensive and there’s no need to waste paper anymore if they

are just going to be thrown in the trash. I think at the middle school level, students need to take

ownership and be responsible on what they should be doing. Flyers shouldn’t be hand out any

more, emails or text messages should take the replacement of the flyers since technology has

taken over this generation. The main component that I would change in student flyers would be

limiting what needs to be hand out. For a example if a teacher gives the class some words for

them to define, he/ she can write the words on the board and allow students to write it down on

their own paper or type it on their phones

Parent Flyers

These flyers are designed for parents to be the audience and that provides

information from the student’s campus. The documents that are in this category can consist of:

student report cards, field trip forms, news from an event and flyers about upcoming events at the

campus.

As a future parent, I would like to see flyers and letters to be sent home from my child’s

school because that shows respect that the teacher or district feel as though it is needed to be

seen. Even though the timing of generation is different it is still good to keep somethings always

the same. I wouldn’t expect a field trip form to be returned by e-mail because paper documents

date and signature.

In closing when thinking about making changes to a flyer, I would say make the flyer

worth seeing. If a teacher wants me to bring candy to a Christmas party for the class I shouldn’t

see money signs on the paper. Flyers are all about presentation and getting the word out the best

way possible.
