MSM 6645 : Fundamental Concepts MBNQA Framework Criteria
Part 1 Fundamental Concepts
Read chapter 3 in the text and the MBNQA Criteria PPTs, focusing on the philosophy, introductory material and the overview information (the introduction through p. 6 and pp. 34-65). We will look at specifics in Criteria 2-7 later, but if you wish you may read this now (and later).
Answer the following questions: Were you aware of the Criteria prior to this class? No Have you ever been in an organization that has discussed Baldrige Criteria, and if so, what did your organization do or discuss? No What is the overall philosophy of the MBNQA and value of the approach offered by the Criteria? How does the MBNQA represent a system? How can these Criteria contribute to organizational improvement? What is the role of leadership in the Criteria (see Criteria #1)?

Part 2 Respond to this post (A minimum of 60 words or more)
· The philosophy of the MBNQA is to increase an organization’s capabilities to achieve their goals through an objective assessment of current operations and identification of how the organization can improve (National Institute of Standards and Technology, 2017). The philosophy is further supported through the focus of the organization’s core values and concepts, processes, results, linkages, and improvement. The Baldridge Excellence Framework represents a system through the assessment of how the different areas of an organization work together as one system. For example, when focusing on the linkages, an organization will evaluate the relationship between strategic planning and operations to determine areas for improvement (National Institute of Standards and Technology, 2017). I was familiar with the MBNQA from a business class I took. However, I only knew the categories and did not understand what is assessed in each criterion. My organization has never mentioned the Baldrige criteria, which is unfortunate, as there is room for improvement in different areas of my organization. We have used Lean and Six Sigma in our aviation community, and we have similar concepts, such as outstanding leaders result in exceptional performance. The flexibility of the Baldridge Framework is advantageous to any organization, as evidenced in the case of Liberty Healthcare, who tailored the criteria to their organization to improve and establish a continuous improvement program (Shields & Jennings, 2013). Based on the use of familiar tools and the flexibility of MBNQA criteria, I believe the Navy can benefit immensely from the Baldrige Excellence Framework.
The criteria of performance excellence include a profile of an organization and the following categories; leadership, strategy, customers, measurement, analysis and knowledge management, workforce, operations, and results (National Institute of Standards and Technology, 2017). Each category consists of specific areas to address, for example, the role of leadership is to ensure organization members understand the mission, vision, organization values, and to enable effective communications and successful operations that are sustainable (National Institute of Standards and Technology, 2017). Leadership also assesses societal responsibilities, and the manner in which the organization behaves ethically can affect the relationship with customers. While leadership is integral to the performance of the organization, each category is just as important, and the interconnectedness between all categories is where the true value of the Malcolm Baldrige Framework exists. The categories are interdependent, and like systems theory, the relationship between the facets of the organization can best assess an organization and determine where there is an opportunity for improvement.
Part 3 Reflection: (A minimum of 60 words or more)
· Deming's 5 Deadly Diseases/Sins (for the reflection post) as well as any thoughts on the assignment or what we learned this week
This video is on youtube:

This posting is for you to reflect on what you learned during the week from others, from the readings, and from any other sources relevant to the class relative to continuous improvement (not where to see a movie, sports event, share baseball stats or get decorating ideas from side conversations). Your reflection needs to include what you have learned that may be new or different and how this will impact your leadership style going forward - think about what you learned and how you can use this to improve everything/anything. I read every submission to the forums, and you should read at least the primary postings - I hope you read everything. If I see a submission similar to an “I agree” type of comment or anything off track, I will remove it, and the student will not receive any credit for it
