MIND THEORY AND IDENTITY 4
Mind Theory And Identity
The mind an identity theory can be termed as a hypothesis called the physicalism, this hypothesis states that all the occurrences that which happened in human mind and the activities can be grouped into types that which are then which are corelated to the activities that transpires in the human mind. In this paper I will discuss the eliminative materialism theory which state that, the state of the body operates only on the body but have no brain to make the reasoning. The theory does not explain exclusively the understanding done by human brains to help human to reason. In this paper, I will explain these theories and how Chinese room experiment challenged them and finally defend one of the theories of mind in details. However, the experiments conducted to explain the relationship between machine and human mind this is because machine can not reason as human mind do.
The first theory is the identity theory, state that the mental state such as pain is directed or is similar to the way the body respond to any other factor that affect the body. Secondly, the simulation theory, when you activate a person thinking or anything that cause the process of the brain that thinks and relating it to the person’s behavior. The theory of mind deals with the scrutiny of how mental state ascribes to another person than help us to be able to explain and predict the action of the person. More so, survival can fully depend on the ability of the individual to change the current state of the course and respond to an advantageous or a bad stimulus
Eliminative theory of mind is the most radical, this theory views the human mind as there is no mental state. It goes ahead and urges that the mind is nothing more or less than just brain. And therefore, since according to the theory there is no mental state, the functionalism theory and the identity theories are therefore impossible.
Chinese room argument is the John Searle experiment that is widely used to counter Artificial intelligence (AI). The theory claims that, the machines are able to think on their own and hence becomes able to copy the way human beings think, the machines are designed to be able to interpret some computer languages written as symbols. Other stronger artificial claim with better and advanced technology the computer can be a mind on its own, can be intelligent as people by being able to understand and see things as human do. This experiment has been used sufficiently challenge the identity mind theory of functionalism.
The experiment claims that the way computers work can also reach a point and start thinking like the way human do. This concept is used in the experiment challenged the theories and it is because once the computer is subjected to signs and symbols it can interpret them. Hence it was concluded that understanding of the unknown symbols does not mean that person know what those characters actually means but can still read them anyway. Theory of mind give human capacity to comprehend or understand other people hold believes that differs from their own belief and interest
Functionalism theory of mind provided two-sided arguments in that, the functionalist cannot explain or account for an explanation of the unknown symbols in a given symbols that which cannot be understood by other people who have not been exposed to it before. Other similar case is the Turing-functionalist understanding of thinking as the manipulation of some symbols and character. And therefore, a mind is the ability to interpret and understand concepts. Functionalism theory of mind tells us about self, self-awareness, and identity. Psychological continuity is claimed to follow the functionalist theory of mind. More so, it was proved it follows the account of mental property that is proved to be weaker and less contentious than the functionalism.
Eliminative theory reduces the mental phenomena to the physical phenomena and therefore does not agree with the agreed notion of the world that, the world operates around the mental and mental substances. It claims that everything in the world can be accomplished without the intervention of the mind.
