Leadership and Power

Leadership- use of power and influence to direct activities of people towards goals.

Power- ability to influence behavior of others and resist unwanted return influence.

Types of Power

Legitimate- based on authority and chain of command

Coercive- have control over punishments in an organization- fire, demote, suspend, lower pay- not best way to manage.

Reward- if someone has control over resources and rewards and employee wants

Expert- from a person’s knowledge, expertise, skill or knowledge, problem solving skills

Referent- desire to identify and associate with a person- affection, admiration, loyalty toward a specific person.

Influence

Use of behavior to change someone else’s behavior or attitude.

Tactics:

Rational persuasion-using facts

Inspirational appeal- appeal to persons values, personality

Consultation, participative method

Collaboration- manager helps employee do task, reach goal

Ingratiation and personal appeals- favors, compliments based on friendship

Exchange- offer reward for task accomplishment

Negotiating

We all negotiate!

Steps

Preparation- set goals, understand other party you are talking to as much as possible

Exchange information ask key questions about needs, listen

Bargain- concessions; keep needs/other party’s motives in mind; win/win- Covey book.

Close the deal; commitment by both parties to agreement
