Background

This final assignment challenges you to apply your knowledge of conducting investigative interviews and interrogations to create a practical field guide for officers.  You'll be creating a handy pocket guide; think of it as your go-to reference for the field, that synthesizes the knowledge gained throughout this course.  This assignment will cover all of the course learning outcomes. 

Scenario 

You are a seasoned training officer tasked with creating a concise, user-friendly field guide to assist officers in understanding and applying the techniques learned in this course for investigative interviews and interrogations.  The guide should be designed for easy reference in the field. 

Instructions

Create a "pocket guide" based on investigative interviews and interrogations. Your guide should be concise yet comprehensive, covering the following: 

1. Recognizing and Understanding Behavior: Include a section on recognizing and understanding both verbal and nonverbal behavioral symptoms that indicate truthfulness or deception.  Provide examples of each. 

2. Pre-Interview/Interrogation Questions: Develop five (5) pre-interview/interrogation questions designed to assess whether the interviewee or suspect is likely to be truthful or deceptive.  Explain the rationale behind your questions. 

3. Theme Development: Explain how to develop a theme for an interrogation, such as laying blame on someone else or establishing a reason for the suspect's presence at the scene. 

4. Interview vs. Interrogation: Clearly define the difference between an interview and an interrogation and outline the appropriate techniques for each. 

5.  Overcoming Objections and Excuses: Provide strategies for effectively overcoming objections and excuses made by interviewees or suspects.  Explain why these strategies are effective. 

6. Converting Oral to Written Confessions: Describe the process of converting an oral confession into a written statement, ensuring that it is legally sound and admissible as evidence in court.   

7. Legal Aspects: Summarize the key principles of the U.S. Constitution (Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, and Fourteenth Amendments) and relevant case law that pertain to interviews and interrogations. 

8. Written Statement: List the twenty points of a written statement that should be included in a written statement to ensure it is admissible and reliable as evidence. 

Your guide should be visually appealing and easy to navigate.  Use bullet points, tables, diagrams, or other visual aids to enhance understanding.  Use only the course materials as sources.  Cite all sources using APA format.  The final guide should be concise and easy to use in a field setting. 

Length: This assignment must be 4-5 sentences for each key concept. 

References: Include 1 scholarly resources for each key concept.
