Running head: Discrimination and Harassment at Workplace 1

Discrimination and Harassment at Workplace 2

By definition, discrimination means to make someone inferior by use of means and other sources. But over time, discrimination at the workplace is becoming a trend. People are discriminated based on race, color, class and socioeconomic status. Most of the people have faced discrimination even because of gender differences. There are thousands of laws that protect equality at the workplace and equal distribution of resources. However, still, some organizations discriminate their employees and do not provide equal opportunities to males and females. Comment by Christopher Ogilvie: This statement contradicts itself. Purpose Statement

The purpose of this problem discussion essayreport is to reveal facts about a workplace problem that affects most of usthe audience and employees in many ways. Discrimination and harassment at the workplace affect employee's efficiency and affectivity at the workplace. There are many types of harassment and discriminatory actionsion that we have to face in the workplace.

There is a vast list of factors on which we are discriminated at the workplace and most of the time; you do not realize the happening of discrimination with your or around you. Comment by Christopher Ogilvie: If you’re going to open so broadly, which is fine, later in the essay your audience expects definitions or explanations of this “…vast list of factors on which we are discriminated…”

Being a woman, there is always discrimination in gender roles. Women have to meet thousands of troubles to handle the workplace. You being a woman have to face many open and hidden challenges that will challenge your position as well as your image at the workplace. The significant type of discrimination, being a woman you will face at the workplace, will be work burden and the wage gap. Many countries promote inequality in the workplace. For example, the United States and Iraq are at the top of the list that supports the pay/wage gap and inequality at the workplace. Comment by Christopher Ogilvie: Too vague. Consider your audience, who are most likely feeling like the ones who are causing the discrimination, are waiting to learn how they are being discriminatory. “thousands of troubles” is vague terminology. Get specific. Comment by Christopher Ogilvie: Define “work burden” and give latest research data on “wage gap” disparities Comment by Christopher Ogilvie: Cite the list

The pay gap at the workplace is high, and there are no legal practices to control or manage the situation. In Iraq, women's are collecting 30% of what men get. This is the reason for the country's backwardness and low economic growth. Women's are still facing many difficulties while holding managerial and superior positions. Researches also reveal that only 34% of women's are working as managers. The pay gap is because of the cultural beliefs and traditional organizational systems, where the matriarchal system is running. (Women in Iraq Factsheet). Comment by Christopher Ogilvie: As informative and important as this is, I would argue stressing specific wage gap disparities at your audience’s workplace. I’m not sure how effect citing an Iraqi fact sheet will persuade your audience to the problem (which needs a definitive statement, btw)

Women are also facing harassment of multiple types at the workplace like sexual harassment, age harassment, and harassment based on skin color and ethnicity. Everyday newspapers and social media portray news about sexual harassment in the workplace. Because of poor law and inadequate enforcement, no one takes notice of this discrimination, and thus, these events are frequent at the workplace.

These happenings and unusual events at the workplace also show the weakness of the workplace and its human resource center. Being a woman, we get less social security rights and protection comparatively to men. In some organizations in the United States, women were have also discriminated against pregnancy leaves; they got equal leaves like men. Discrimination based on pregnancy is illegal. Whether small or large organizations, discrimination, and harassment are happening in the workplace. Employees use their positions and employers take advantage of their job to order their subordinates and enjoy their supremacy.

You are men or women; you will be exposed to discrimination in the workplace. Discrimination could be in direct and indirect ways. If someone unconventionally talks to you or showing rude and inappropriate behavior, this could also be termed discrimination and harassment. If your employer tries to impose orders and work on you from time to time, this could also be termed as discrimination. If your work shift is of 12 hours, and you are forced to work for 14-hours, this is also a form of discrimination. Comment by Christopher Ogilvie: This reads a vague and full of supposition. You need specifics backed by evidence.

Sexual harassment is also spreading and practiced at workplaces. There are specified laws that protect employees at workplace from unwelcome conduct of sexual assault, but many organizations deny the implementation and enforcement of these laws. Events like discrimination and harassment effect an organization's image and social place. This problem is not new, nor is it discussed at low levels. At international platforms, this problem gain importance and laws were introduced that fails to get attention and enforcement.

Men and women both are victims of discrimination and assault at the workplace. Problems associated at work are numerous, but discrimination and harassment are highlighted these days. Workplace bullying and victimization also come under the section of discrimination. If you are from a developed country might be you will less experience this workplace problem. But people from developing countries can better understand the problem discussed here. Among developing countries, ethnicity is also a significant base for discrimination and harassment. People are divided into different ethnic groups, and these ethnic groupings face different environments and dealings at the workplace. Employers judge ethnicity and other higher authority members and their duties and wages are decided. The workplace environment is not shaped and arranged based on skills and specialization. Still, on ethnicity, race, gender and status are some indicators that determine whether an employee will be hired as a manager or as a peon.

A number of examples are present there that shows women and men are judged based on gender at the workplace. If you are a woman, you will not get opportunities more than men, despite having same skills and proficiency. Men's as employees are always welcomed at the workplace instead of women, who are selected optionally. Comment by Christopher Ogilvie: At this point in your document, you need to cite specific examples (and if you can keep it close to home—meaning, discrimination in your office—that would be a better way to sell the problem. Which still doesn’t have a specific work statement yet!!!!

To sum up, discrimination and harassment are some highlighted issues in the workplace in the modern era. It impacts the personal as well as professional life of the victim. Women are discriminated and mostly sexually harassed because of gender differences. Gender disparity and inequality is prevailing in the society and letting women's down in the outer environment. Some laws protect discrimination against men and women at the workplace, but these laws are not enforced at most of the workplaces of the United States and Iraq. Employment is an opportunity, but it also discloses several challenges and unacceptable events that might be not positive. If you are women, then be ready to face discrimination of different kinds, both direct and indirect at the workplace.

This is vague and needs specificity.
