Drug Use in Baseball

Use of Performance Enhancement Drugs (PEDs) is a major problem in baseball hence the need to control it. Drug tests should be mandatory and penalties for players found to have used performance enhancing drugs should be severe to control usage. Moreover, keeping in mind that some drugs are medicinal and players with certain conditions are allowed to partake. There should be a clear line concerning the drug use. Comment by ḞảĴéŘ ...: General comment about the entire essay: Cover what is in place already as far as regulation goes, and be more specific about solution.

Drug use in baseball has been an unending issue for Major Baseball Leagues. Estimating of 25-40 % of major baseball athletes are drug addicts ("Doping In Baseball"). Many successful professional baseball players have recorded doping cases in MLB history, these illegal substances have found their way in to the academic levels. College athletes has also been found to be high partakers of the drugs for lack of good drug test structures. This can lead to a trickling up of the substance use from college, Division I, II and III to the major leagues. Some of the dugs that have been found to play a major role are cocaine, steroids, amphetamines, tobacco and alcohol. Comment by ḞảĴéŘ ...: Sources on college doping? Comment by ḞảĴéŘ ...: In what ?

Today, there is little disagreement that PEDs use by athletes is problematic; however, the rational of drug regulation is still a subject of concern. There is need for the implementation of policies to discourage the use of drugs by athletes. This is because sporting can have a positive impact on the moral behavior of athletes and fans and including huge punishment will discourage the use of PEDs. The idea that sport should contribute to the moral growth of the children is reasonable since there are social and personal benefits linked with sport participation. Whether social or physical participation, individual can gain better self-esteem, reduced stress and anxiety while improving the mental toughness (Lardon, 2008)

Taking PEDS violates the regulations of baseball thus it is said to be cheating. Cheating is a deliberate, knowing and voluntary violation of the already existing rules. The most disputable current policy issue has happened in baseball, where stimulant mishandles negatively impacted the game for decades. Also, although no logical examinations guarantee that stimulants provide baseball players with an unjustifiable advantage, these chemicals have for quite some time been thought to do such due to their psychoactive and physiologic properties (Psychiatry, 2008). In this case, the regulating body should come up with a proper measure to make sure that there is no abuse of these stimulants by involving psychiatric consultation. Comment by ḞảĴéŘ ...: ?? Comment by ḞảĴéŘ ...: Which drugs are we talking about here? Comment by ḞảĴéŘ ...: Do they not already? What does the MLB currently do?

The games integrity is highly characterized by the assumption that, all players compete on level ground. It is very unfortunate that in today’s time and age, drug abuse is becoming one of the major challenges in the regulating bodies in many if not all sports. Drug test structures thus should be put in place to ensure that there is no player that has an advantage over the rest for drug stimulation. the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) have an assumption that use of Drugs in baseball can lead to other athletes unfairly disadvantaged. Comment by ḞảĴéŘ ...: One is in place. What is this structure, and is it sufficient.

In addition, Michael Dillingham, MD ("Michael Dillingham, MD - Drug Use In Sports - Procon.Org"), who is the retired San Francisco 49ers football team physician says that "Society cares because steroid use is a form of cheating. Since steroids work so well, they create an unfair advantage for those who take them, and this breaks the social contract athletes have implicitly agreed to: We are going to have a fair contest. There are things we can and cannot do. Even if there were a safe performance-enhancing substance, if it weren't available to everybody, using it would still be cheating. “Doping” is in contrary with the spirit of fair play in sports. Some players gain a competitive advantage over others due to doping. Most anti-doping agencies aim at ending use of drugs by imposing heavy sanction to culprits. Sports competitions ought to be fair so that the best participant win.

Stress is something that baseball players have to endure during their training sessions. In utilization of antidepressants for treating over-training disorder. Overtraining alludes to a negative reaction to preparing pressure and is frequently because of constantly high preparing levels without times of lower preparing loads. Overtraining additionally can prompt weakness and misery. It has been conjectured that overtraining disorder may include dysregulation of neuroendocrine and brain function. Comment by ḞảĴéŘ ...: which is the stress caused by over training?

Treatment legally directs that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine re-uptake inhibitor (SNRIs) should be active, and these have episodically been accounted for to help competitors with this normal issue (Psychiatry, 2008). Also, the utilization of SNRIs for different torment conditions influences one to consider if this class of medication can profit perseverance competitors who naturally adapt to enormous agony amid preparing and rivalry. There should be a clear guide that show whether it is fair or not to use the antidepressants in such conditions. Comment by ḞảĴéŘ ...: This might be presented as a counterargument. Drugs as a treatment to a common condition of the game. Comment by ḞảĴéŘ ...: Still a bit in the middle. What's your stance?

It is true that not all drugs are harmful as some are meant to maintain the normal body functioning of a person. Hence, there are certain drugs which are normally used by psychiatric patients to control their anxiety so that they can participate in baseball games. There is always a problem with these products as some of the baseball players who are not psychiatric uses the drug just before a competitive match so as not to feel the tension of the game. This is because they believe the drug has some physiologic and psychoactive properties (Psychiatry, 2008). To resolve this issue, players should always be tested before and after the games and players found to be abusing the drug should face severe penalties. Comment by ḞảĴéŘ ...: What constitutes abuse here? Any use of such drugs? Unprescribed use?

Study has shown that certain permitted drugs can help calm players with the psychiatric disorder in high-stress competition. Psychiatric consultation should also be involved to make sure that some players do not get a loophole, in using stimulates as in the case of patients suffering from a psychiatric disorder. Proper medication should be administered to the patients participating in these baseball competitions. Comment by ḞảĴéŘ ...: Question is whether relieving stress though drugs goes against the spirit of fairness.

Once misused drugs are generally harmful to anyone’s health. Drugs study over time has shown that people who constantly abuse drugs can have both short and long-term effects. Different drugs have different effects on people. The drug effect can also be because of how the drug is taken, the volumes taken the immune of a person and also other causes. Some drugs have an effect of causing one to be weak over a short period while others affect the heart rate and can even cause death.

Once a player engages in drug abuse, illegal drugs or even the performance enhancer drugs, he puts himself in a position of risk as the drugs may stimulate him at the time but in the long run they may cause health conditions such as lung disease which may prevent him from being able to cope with the games pressure or even worse cause a mental disorder.

There are various cases where players have died, due to use of illegal drugs such as cocaine. Illegal drugs have also ruined the game, as many players are indulging in drugs such as cocaine (Amanda, 2013). Most of these drugs are being used by players to boost their confidence in the game, but they end up killing themselves due to excessive use of these harmful drugs. Comment by ḞảĴéŘ ...: How has it ruined the game? Comment by ḞảĴéŘ ...: examples

Physicians engaged with the professional baseball need to completely comprehend the complexity of the drugs and to draw the line. Mandatory tests should be conducted, and players take full responsibility in case the test goes sideways. This will eradicate the challenges associated with drugs facing the game.  Comment by ḞảĴéŘ ...: bit of an exaggeration

Drug abuse has no good end result; hence, players should not abuse their medical drugs or even the illegal ones. The effects may be appearing after a short while or even after a long time. With this, it is important for players to keep away from drugs as they lead to health conditions which may result to death. Structures for drug management will also help in reducing the cases.

In addition, as good as it is to work on disciplining and diminishing drug use in baseball, it is also very important to work on caring for the interest of the players by ensuring that they are cared for. This is because apart from enhancing performance and treating patients with psychiatric problem, athletes may abuse drugs due to pain, injury, and pressure to perform among others. A good number of players who have already retired from baseball, have been found abusing drugs because they have conditions they could have managed if taken care of properly. Comment by ḞảĴéŘ ...: Last sentence that sums up a greater portion of the essay
