Essay 4 Question:

This week we focused on the abolition of slavery and the reconstruction of the country following the end of military conflict. I believe the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 was the first step in reconstructing the country, primarily because it added a second important war goal. In addition to reuniting the former United States, the war was now also about providing the nation with a new definition of freedom. During the traditional period of Reconstruction (1865-1877), the U.S. government and the people of the United States faced three major problems: 1) how to bring back those eleven states that had no longer wanted to be part of the United States and formed their own country instead; 2) what to do with those millions of non-slaveholding white southerners who had fired upon the Stars and Stripes and killed hundreds of thousands of young men wearing the uniform of the U.S. military; 3) and what would be the meaning of freedom for over 4 million people who had been enslaved, and would freedom be the same for them as it was for everyone else?

This week we watched two films that depicted major events in the ending of slavery. We also watched a film that looked at the conflicts for some southerners both during the war and afterwards, as well as a documentary from the History Channel about Reconstruction. In addition, we read four chapters that dealt with the ending of slavery, the beginning and ending of Reconstruction, and the meaning of the Civil War and Reconstruction in historical memory.

In this essay, you will need to make an argument explaining whether you think Reconstruction was a success or a failure. You will need to define what you mean by each of these terms. In your argument, you can say that some aspects of Reconstruction were a success while others were not. However, in the end you must give an overall answer to this important question. In addition, you are also required to make an assessment of how well you think that Hollywood has presented that argument to the American public.

In your essay, you must include material from at least three of our films, as well as use evidence from a minimum of four documents with at least one of them coming from three of our chapters. In sum, you need to include material from at least three films AND at least four documents coming from at least three chapters that we read.

You will need to include a short description of the historical arguments conveyed in your films. You should compare and contrast the arguments made in these films and explain why they may or may not be different. You will also need to assess the historical accuracy of these films by comparing them with the viewpoints expressed in our documents. You will need to discuss what you believe to be the historical accuracy of your films and why you believe or question their accuracy.

* You will then conclude your essay with a restatement of your argument explaining whether you think that Reconstruction was a success or a failure; as well as make an assessment of how well you think Hollywood has presented that argument to the American public.

* Finally, you must defend your argument using the materials we have both viewed AND read during this past week. You can also include other items in our book to support your argument.
