Hypothetical Case Scenario

Carinne, is a thirteen-year old Hispanic girl who has come to seek human services after she suffered mental and physical abuse at the hands of her mother’s boyfriend. She does not appear to have any physical or mental disabilities and has clearly communicated with staff since arriving at our facility. Carinne has lived in the same home most of her life and although disheveled slightly, it appears the teen and her siblings did attempt to have some normalcy as there were a few scattered decorations in the otherwise bare home. Carinne’s mother’s boyfriend was ultimately sent to jail for the horrible acts he committed against the girl and the young girl is now under our care, by order of the courts. Her mother appears to harbor some resentment at the fact that she is now single and must work three jobs to support her children. She had been dating her boyfriend for five years.

Carinne’s abuse started two-years ago and was apprehensive to report the abuse due to fears of even worse treatment than she had been receiving. The abuse was exposed by a friend of Carinne who came to her house to spend some time with her and later reported to her family that the boyfriend was making vulgar comments to the girls while they were outside in their bathing suits. Carinne is making the move to high school this year and is extremely excited, as she seems to love school and has involved herself in many after school activities. Despite the aspects of abuse in her life Carinne does very well in school and has made the honor role both semesters this year. Her biological father has not been in the picture and it is unknown if her mother is sure of who her father is, as she avoids questions regarding him, when prompted.

Carinne’s mother her never been the nurturing type to her children. She has worked in a few local bars for most of her adult life and does not make much money. Instead she spends most of her time and wages in those bars. She has been known to neglect her children’s basic needs such as a refrigerator with food in it and running water. There have been a few occasions where Carinne went to shower at a friend’s home as she went days without one. It is believed she joined after school sports to utilize the facilities to maintain hygiene. Carrine has been known to save her breakfast at school and bring them home so her two younger siblings had more to eat.

Carinne has two younger brothers who are nine and eleven. Since she could walk, she became a surrogate mother to the boys. Often, she would have to change their diapers and make them bottles, as their needs were also neglected by their mother. Although it is still unknown what the level of abuse has been in the home Carinne and both of her siblings appear to be connected with groups of friends and have not become socially withdrawn as of now.

Most of the family Carinne is aware that she has is either involved in drugs and petty crimes in the area and are well-known my local law enforcement due to that factor. Other than friends from school and their families Carinne and their siblings appear to have any structure, although being that she is merely a child herself, it appears that she did the best she could with the resources she had to create familial structure for her siblings. Carinne has a tremendous amount of courage relative to prosecuting her abuser for his actions against her and has worked diligently with advocates and counselors to put her abuser away.

Carinne’s mother is unfortunately unfit to care for Carinne and she fears being separated from her sibling most, as she has been like a mother to them-all of her life. It is unknown where the children will be placed after court proceedings end. In the meantime, Carinne and her siblings have moved a few hours away with their aging grandmother. Carinne’s grandmother had substance abuse issues when she was younger and had similar issues to caring for Carinne’s mother. There is a long history of substance abuse issues in Carinne’s family and it is unknown if any have received services for the disease that has plagued their family for decades.
