Introduction to Literature Review
Abstract
The present study focuses on evaluating the literature on family and parent training from the perspective of applied behavior analysis (ABA) for adolescents with developmental and intellectual disabilities. An exhaustive search was conducted in the APA PsycINFO database, spanning from January 2000 to December 2023. Inclusion criteria were established that combined key terms such as Parent Training, Family Training, Caregiver Training, Autism, Development Disabilities, Intellectual Disabilities and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). The results showed a total of 55 novel articles after removal of duplicates and exclusion of irrelevant articles after review of titles and abstracts. These articles were organized based on different combinations of keywords, allowing a comprehensive examination of the research landscape in this field. Significant trends were identified, including a greater number of studies focused on autism compared to other developmental and intellectual disabilities. This study provides a critical overview of the existing literature, highlighting key areas of research and potential gaps in knowledge. The findings obtained have important implications for clinical practice and policy formulation in the field of ABA and the treatment of adolescents with developmental and intellectual disabilities, underscoring the importance of parent and family training as an integral component of effective interventions.
Keywords: Parent Training, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Adolescents with Autism, Developmental Disabilities, Parent and Caregiver.
Introduction
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex condition that significantly affects development and daily functioning of individuals who experience it. Cite Please Characterized by deficits in social communication, repetitive behavior patterns, and restriction of interests, ASD presents with wide variability in its clinical presentation and in the impact, it has on the lives of individuals who suffer from it (Baykal et al., 2018). Caregiving burden, anxiety, and depression are common concerns among caregivers of children and adolescents with ASD, highlighting the need for effective interventions to support both individuals with ASD and their families (Baykal et al., 2018 ). Heterogeneity in the clinical presentation of ASD means that each person's needs and challenges are unique, often requiring individualized care tailored to their specific characteristics (Baykal et al., 2018).
The caregiving burden associated with ASD can be considerable for families and caregivers of children and adolescents with this disorder. In addition to the practical and emotional demands associated with caring for a person with special needs, caregivers may also experience elevated levels of anxiety and depression due to worry about their loved one's well-being and the stresses associated with managing their needs (Baykal et al., 2018). These additional challenges highlight the importance of intervening not only to support individuals with ASD in their development and functioning, but also to provide effective support to their families and caregivers. Research has shown that parent and family training is an effective strategy for addressing the needs of both individuals with ASD and their caregivers Cite. This approach is based on the premise that parents and caregivers can play a crucial role in the development and well-being of their children by learning strategies and techniques Cite.
The present review focuses on the critical evaluation of the existing literature on family and parent training from the perspective of applied behavior analysis (ABA) for adolescents with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Analysis of this literature is crucial to understanding the effectiveness and approaches used in the implementation of interventions aimed at improving the well-being and quality of life of this specific population.
Among the trends identified was increased attention to autism compared to other developmental and intellectual disabilities. This finding highlights the importance and prevalence of autism as a significant area of interest in parent and family training research. Additionally, a variety of approaches and strategies used in the training programs were observed, underscoring the diversity of interventions available for this population. The critical review of the literature also identified possible gaps in knowledge and areas for future research. For example, a lack of studies was noted that specifically address the needs of certain subgroups within the population of adolescents with developmental and intellectual disabilities.
Additionally, areas were identified where empirical evidence was limited or contradictory, highlighting the need for further research into these topics. Thus, this review seeks to provide a comprehensive view of the literature on family and parent training from an ABA perspective for adolescents with developmental and intellectual disabilities. This review has the potential to improve understanding of effective interventions and promote the development of more effective training programs focused on the needs of this vulnerable population.
Through this comprehensive literature review, this research aims to provide a critical and comprehensive overview of the research landscape in the field of family and parent training for adolescents with developmental and intellectual disabilities. The findings identified from the research conducted reveal significant trends that highlight the importance of autism as a predominant area of focus in parent and family training research. This trend reflects the prevalence and complexity of autism as a condition that requires specialized care and specific therapeutic approaches. In addition to highlighting the focus on autism, this research also highlights the diversity of approaches and strategies used in parenting and family training programs. This variety underscores the need for an individualized approach tailored to the unique needs of each adolescent with developmental and intellectual disabilities and their families. This study not only provides a synthesis of existing evidence, but also identifies key areas of research and potential knowledge gaps that require more detailed attention in future.
The relevance of this research lies in its ability to inform effective clinical practices and policies in the field of applied behavior analysis (ABA) and the treatment of adolescents with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Parent and family training is highlighted as an essential component of interventions as it offers a holistic approach that addresses both the needs of the adolescent and family dynamics. By training parents and caregivers with ABA-based skills and strategies, a continuous supportive environment is promoted that can significantly improve the well-being and quality of life of adolescents affected by these conditions.
To sum it up, this research seeks to enrich existing knowledge about parent and family training in the specific context of adolescents with developmental and intellectual disabilities. By providing a critical understanding of the existing literature, it is intended to highlight key areas for future research and clinical practice. This includes identifying the most effective intervention approaches, evaluating the generalizability of training effects to different settings and situations, as well as developing policies that support broad and sustained implementation of family training programs. By addressing these needs, this research is expected to have a significant impact on the provision of health and education services for adolescents with developmental and intellectual disabilities, thereby contributing to the improvement of their quality of life and the promotion of inclusion and well-being in society.
Your introduction needs some adjustment to ensure you are discussing the topic broadly with supporting paragraphs throughout then setting up your purpose. You should plan to add the following information:
·
· Add in more specific information defining and describing family and caregiver training in ABA
· Find articles indicating how it is important to teach parents/families to implement skills or provide additional support
· Identify articles that have younger participants to denote that there is often a focus on this age-group
· Move into the age-group/demographic of adolescents and potential areas of need that are present (such as ongoing areas of need in communication, social, and behavior skills)
· Identify why it is important to target caregiver training with this group
· Complete purpose paragraph
