leadership and effectiveness skills
7 Habits of Highly Effective People
Stephen R. Covey
Introduction
All of us have habits- once habits- hard to break
Habits express our character, and relate to our effectiveness or lack thereof
Affects how we interact- need to work on increasing knowledge, skills and desire to do!
Not just a book to read and shelve or giveaway- a companion for continual change and growth!
Teach what you learn here; do not just learn- share it soon after you hear/read it with a friend, your parents, your professor etc.
If you practice this the perception of “you” will change- as someone who is growing, helpful and supportive.
Make notes about yourself as you go though this – will maybe give you some thoughts on final presentation
7 Habits
Be Proactive
Begin with the End in Mind
Put First Things First
Think Win/Win
Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood
Synergize
Sharpen the Saw
Be Proactive
Responsible for our own lives
Function of our decisions and our responsibility for making things happen
If you want a job or better job, take interest and aptitude tests, study the industry, specific problems the firm is facing, then show how you will help them
Don’t be reactive to changes in environment:
“No one can hurt you without your consent!”
Or do you say nothing I can do about it, my emotional life is controlled by others, someone else is limiting my behavior etc.
YOU are in charge!
Be Proactive
Circle of Concern vs Circle of Influence:
-Where do we focus our time? On things we can’t control? On things we can influence? The more we spend time on things we can control or influence the more proactive we are.
-At the center of our circle of influence is our ability to make and keep commitments and promises.
.
Begin with the End in Mind
Start with a clear understanding of your destination
Will help you understand where you are now and put your future steps in the right direction.
What’s deeply important to you?
What do you want people to say about you when you aren’t around anymore?
In business, as a leader, if you know where you want to go then its easier to set up a path, tasks, and processes to get you there!
Put First Things First
Proper Time management with end in mind!
Quadrant 1- Urgent/Important- crises, pressing problems, deadlines
Quadrant 2-Important/Not Urgent- prevention, PC activities, relationships, new opportunities, planning, recreation
Quadrant 3- Urgent/Not Important- interruptions, some calls, some texts, some meetings, popular activities
Quadrant 4- Not urgent/not important- Trivia, some mail, some texts, time wasters, pleasant activities
Where do you spend more of your time?? Quadrant ones are toughest and most stressful?
Think Win/Win
How to communicate and negotiate
Will cover in later week
Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood
Listen, really listen. Be empathetic

Synergize
Whole is greater than sum
Using all habits to unleash the greatest powers we can have
Synergy in business, communication and classroom
As a teacher being proactive, open, honest and caring may get the whole class to be that way!?
A student may open up about a related personal experience which makes other students more comfortable and appreciative of that student.
Sharpen the Saw
Preserves and enhances the great assets we all have!
Exercising and renewing these 4 dimensions super important: physical, spiritual/value, mental and social/emotional.
Must be proactive to do!
