Often, data figures such as these are meant to make a large looming concept like "poverty" more manageable, but if you don't have an idea of the weight or context of those numbers, they are often meaningless. The data is helpful in some ways, but we are so inundated with facts and figures like these that they don't resonate very deeply with us.
