You have been hired as a consultant by the local police commissioner to lend your expertise on criminal justice research for the education of the police captains, who will be developing a new citywide crime prevention strategy. As an introductory task in this position, you are to write a letter to the local police captains explaining the theories used to approach your research.

Prepare a 5–7 page letter to the captains of the police precincts that address the following questions:

• What are the key differences between the 4 identified types of research theories above?
• Is any one type of theory more valid than the others? Why or why not?
• What are the differences and similarities (if any) between theory and hypothesis?
• What are variables, and why are they important components of theoretical schemes?

Above you will see four different points that I need to see addressed in your paper. In essence, this paper can be broken into four sections, which should each represent subheadings. I recommend the following structure for the paper (you may use it or develop your own but have an outline). I have also provided a book chapter that you will be of help as you proceed in the course.

Your paper will include the following sections:

• Introduction (Two Paragraphs) - Here you want to briefly discuss the purpose of the paper. Answer this question, This paper will introduce the reader to what and why is it important?
  
  
• Overview of Research Theories (4-Pages Total) – Provide an overview of the theory, strengths and weaknesses, and your personal perspective on if you prefer this method.

o    Axiomatic (This is a Subheading)

• Research Method Key Concepts (1-2-Pages) – Provide

o    Theory (What is it, provide an example, specific to the crime prevention context)

• Types of Variables

o    Additional Concepts

• Conclusion (One Paragraph)

Be certain that you do not approach this letter as a “question and answer” format. Use the crime prevention context you have been given to explain each of the theory approaches, what strength they provide, the relationship between theory and your hypothesis (use the context to do this), and then identify a few variables within the project.

Remember your context is crime prevention strategies. At this point in your career, you should have some familiarity with crime prevention and if you do not, I can recommend some great resources to give you the quick details you need. Above all else, remember your audience. You are writing to police captains, so explain with examples. If you write this as concept-definition, you will miss your audience. You have a context, you know the concepts; now just explain them to the reader.

Paper Format: 
5-7 Pages (1750 – 2450 Words) – This includes content only (the body of the paper)
12-point font and Reference section.

Resources: 
Minimum of five. I know this seems like a lot but you are writing on a topic that needs at the very least this many to properly state your case. This means I should see no less than five resources in your reference section and no less than five internal citations
