I chose 1st grade reading because it is the grade level I would love to teach once I complete my degree. Everything that a student learns at a young age creates a foundation for what they will learn in the future. A good example of this would be CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.1.2: Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes)" (Common Core State Standards Initiative,2016). If a student never learns how to understand language it would prevent them from learning how to read. Phonemes are an important part of understanding the English language and is a critical part in learning how to speak the English language (GreatSchools Staff,2016). Lack of english concepts and limited exposure to spoken language can effect how the child speaks, reads and understands English concepts (GreatSchools Staff, 2016).

Common Core Standards in Reading

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.6.1
Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.

 

   This reading standard supports the development of critical reading and thinking skills by allowing the students to understand, make inferences and draw conclusions from text to support their understanding. This standard allow students to think critical about literary text and develop higher order thinking skills.

 

 When students are able to explain or justify their answers, like it is listed in the common core standard above they have a better ability to comprehend the reading material than just simply memorizing information that was given to them.
