DISCUSSION BOARD DUE WEDNESDAY........................................... ALL YOUR REFRENCES CITE IN YOUR PARAGRAPH

A Lyrical Expression of Women, Family, and Community

Now that you have had some experience in this course researching song lyrics written by women, you may have developed an ear for the way a message is uniquely conveyed through song lyrics. The sentiment might be subtle or overt, but either way the listener or reader makes meaning in connection to her or his own experience. Consider how lyrics can celebrate, challenge, and/or promote social change themes related to women, family, and community.

In this week’s Discussion, you choose a song with lyrics that represent social change as it relates to women’s family and community experience. This week, however, differs from previous weeks in that you analyze lyrics posted by a colleague and he or she, in turn, analyzes the lyrics you post.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Consider how music has influenced and/or been influenced by social change.
  • Search your personal music library, the Internet, or another resource for a song (including this week’s Optional Resources) that meets the following criteria:
    • The song was written by a woman.
    • The song reflects a social change theme that directly or indirectly relates to women's family and community experience.
    • The song includes two literary techniques listed in the “Glossary of Terms and Techniques for Literature and Creative Writing” document.
    • The song may be from any time period or country, but lyrics have an English translation available.
  • Summarize and paraphrase the song using proper APA citation rules.
  • Consider how the song offers a social change perspective related to women’s family and community experience.
  • Identify lyrics within the song that reflect the family and community themes conveyed in this week’s required resources by Ensler, Hamlet, Porter, or Brady.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 2 an active link to the lyrics of the song you selected. Include the song title and name of the songwriter with your posting. Use proper APA citation rules.

Respond by Day 4 to at least one of your colleague’s postings in the following way:

  • Post 1–2 paragraphs analyzing the song lyrics posted by your colleague. In your analysis, be sure to identify and address social change themes related to women’s family and community experience. Provide evidence and discuss the effectiveness of two literary techniques used in the song lyrics.

Note: To ensure that each colleague’s post receives a response, please make sure you respond to at least one colleague who has not received a response for this Discussion.

ASSIGNMENT DUE SUNDAY

Worksheet: “Short Story and Essay as a Medium for Understanding the Role of the Wife in Women’s Family and Community Experience”

Are the themes or perspectives found in a piece of fiction any less real than those found in an essay? In either case, a perspective is shared to convey a message about a topic. You can gain insight into a topic or experience and combine it with your own to make meaning and broader connections. In this week’s Assignment, you explore social change themes related to the role of the wife in a family and community context.

To prepare for completion of this worksheet:

  • Review Brady’s “Why I (Still) Want a Wife” and Porter’s “Rope” and apply literary criticism techniques:
    • Question the motive of each author.
    • What are they trying to communicate about the role of “wife” and family and community experience?
    • How do they support their perspective on the role of “wife”?
  • Consider what comes to mind when you think of the term “wife” based on your own experience, family, and culture.
  • What are some key differences you notice between the essay and short story style?

Download the Week 3 Worksheet document from this week’s Learning Resources.

  • Save the worksheet to your computer.
  • Follow the instructions on the worksheet as you complete the three required written responses.
  • Write your responses directly on the worksheet. This is the document that will be submitted.

Submit your Assignment by Day 7.
