This assignment is relevant to understanding and taking a position on a controversial issue related to substance use that have arisen in our society. You will write a paper (1500 – 2000 words) related to a controversial issue in topics related to substance use, substance use disorders, and/or their treatment in modern society. It is preferred that you use scholarly articles to discuss each side of your issue, but you are free to use any credible resources/information that you find in your search/in the textbook. You will be expected to weigh both sides of the issue that you have chosen to discuss.

For this assignment, please:

• Summarize the issue
• Describe each side of the issue in some detail
• Discuss which side of the debate you are on based on the evidence that you have found

Here are some current debates going on in the field of substance abuse research and treatment that you can use to debate in your paper (these are just suggestions; you are free to use other search terms.):

• Should marijuana be legalized? 
• Are needle exchange programs helpful or harmful?
• Are programs that teach individuals who use intravenous drugs how to use needles safely helpful or harmful?
• Helpful or harmful: giving individuals with opioid use disorder Narcan
• Helpful or harmful: medical marijuana
• Helpful or harmful: medication assisted treatment for opioid, cocaine, and/or alcohol use disorders
• Helpful or harmful: making alcohol illegal
• Amphetamines for ADHD in children
• Antidepressants without psychotherapy
• Opioids for chronic pain
• Is addiction a brain disease or a choice?
