Definition of variation is "the extent to which a process differs from the norm. It is related to the statistical concepts of variance and standard deviation, familiar to most health care professionals." (Sollecito & Johnson, 2013). Variation is measured "by performing measurement and statistical analysis to determine that the capability of an existing process to decide whether there is need for improvement." (Sollecito & Johnson, 2013).
