Read Brody (2014) Chapter 5: Managing Employees
Note: Some of you may not have supervised employees, if you have not think of a time when you have supervised volunteers or when you have had to work with an unproductive co-worker. Either of these situations would be fine.
In your written assignment:
- Describe a situation in which you had to deal with an unproductive employee.
- What were the concrete issues?
- What was your role in the situation? What was the employee's role? Was anyone else involved? What parts did they play?
- Describe any emotional issues, personality factors, past history, etc. that might have made the situation more volatile.
- Describe major "phases" of the situation.
- What steps were taken in chronological order?
- What was the end result? Was it satisfactory or unsatifactory? Give reasons for your answer.
- As you reflect on this encounter, what helped it come to resolution? Was there anything that made the situation worse?
