1. Cultural Awareness

First, investigate the cultural demographics in your local school district by searching the district name and the word “demographics” on the Internet. For example, the San Diego Unified School district provides this information on the About San Diego Unified School District page. Then, use this information as your springboard to examine the diverse cultures that make up your school’s population by visiting The Best Sites for Learning about the World's Different Cultures and Reflections from Teachers of Culturally Diverse Children. Finally, write a journal that includes at least three ideas how to make your classroom reflect your school district’s specific cultural demographics.
