I have interviewed a Special Education student that has recently graduated high school.  The Rubrics for this is attached.  4-6 page paper

 

 

Special Education Questionnaire

 

  • How would you describe Special Education?

    1. It means that you aren't as smart as the other kids you may need a little more help than the others.

  • Please describe your experience with Special Education?

    1. It made me feel like I was crazy because my teachers always treated me like it was an atomic bomb that could go off at any time. It made me mad.

  • Do you feel that your plan was set for your best interest?

    1. No because I wasn't challenged, I could literally sleep through a class and still pass the class with an A. I feel like I didn't have get what I needed socially because I still don't know how to walk down the street without freaking out or how to deal with an episode.

  • Were you receiving services for education or medical?

    1. Education with the nurse to give my medication

  • Do you feel that you benefited from your services please explain?

    1. I did, in the sense that I now know how to study and ask for help but I don't know what i'm supposed to do when I'm upset or I'm distracted by hallucinations.

  • Did you receive any related service? (Speech, bussing, health, OT)

    1. Health

  • When did you find out that you had a disability and how did you feel?

    1. Elementary, it was normal until I moved on to middle and high school;

  • Were your needs met and if not what could have been added to better serve you?

    1. No because I don't know how to live without freaking out from things that are probably not even there.

  • Were your parents involved in your IEPs and if so do you feel that their concerns were listened to?

    1. Yes my mother was but the staff wasn't really compliant with her.

  • Were you involved and if so do you feel that your concerns were listened to?

    1. At the very end during high school I was but even then I feel like I wasn't heard

  • Did you receive the services of technology to help assist in your educational goals?

    1. In high school my books were read to me for english class

  • Were you in a class with 2 teachers and in a larger classroom or was it 1 teacher in a smaller class?

    1. Most of my classes were 1 large class with only 1 teacher and my core courses for freshmen and sophomore I had 2 teachers in the classroom.

  • How did you fit in with your classroom and did you lose anything by being in that class?

    1. I fit in well and did not lose anything

  • Is there anything that you would want the system to change that you feel would make it better.

    1. For them to involve the students more in the decision making and talk to me about my illness

  • For future students what would want to tell them to make their experience a beneficial one?

    1. Be your advocate because no one will do it for you.
