REFLECTED BEST-SELF PAPER GUIDELINES

Reflected Best-Self Paper will be worth 100 points of your total course grade.  The purpose of this assignment is to identify your strengths and challenges in becoming a leader/manager and then to explain the things that you must continue to work on that will drive your continuous leadership and management development.  Use the self-related exercises to help you.

Before beginning the paper, you will need to interview five people, a maximum of two family members may be included, and ask them what you are like when you are at your best and worst and how you have shown leadership and management qualities and behaviors in specific circumstances or events.  Make sure to ask for behavioral examples.  You can use your Journal on Blackboard to reflect on these things as you learn them.  

All the interview notes should be summarized at the end of your report with a brief explanation of your relationship with the respondent. 

In the paper summarize the data by identifying common and significant themes as Headings, such as “Under Stressful Situations,” “When in Charge of a Project,” “Hooked on Control,” “Are You a Trustworthy Leader,” etc. 

Then, write out your complete “reflected best self” by completing statements, such as, “When I am at my best, …”  “To be a successful leader, I must work on …,” or “My biggest challenge I need to overcome when working in a team is….,” or any others you think appropriate. 

Clearly identify areas of your strengths and weaknesses.  Make an implementable plan for a minimum of three areas that will aid you now and in the future. This needs to include specific goals that have time frames, are measurable, attainable and realistic. Be sure to identify how you will execute these plans.

Remember: I want to hear your voice, not that of authors or management experts.  Do not include others’ definitions or theories…this isn’t a research paper!  The only outside information needed for this paper are the previously completed self-assessments from 3/6.

The format should mimic that of the syllabus, with appropriate titles, headings that break the paper up into clear segments.  Use single spacing with 1’ margins, using justified block text which provides crisp edges on both sides of the margin.  It looks more professional and polished.  Provide a cover page, table of contents, and page numbers.  The paper must be a minimum of 6 pages including interview notes, but not the cover page, nor table of contents.
