1 page history essay which need to be posted on October 21st  until 4:00 pm

The essay must contain correct information you have learned from classwork and reading. If you include

your opinion, it must be supported by what we’ve studied.

There are four categories I will look at in grading the essay. Each category will be worth from 1 to 3 points.

1. Does the essay answer all parts of the question?

2. Does the answer include specific details from the textbook and lecture notes?

3. Is the answer clear and complete – do the statements make sense when read?

(Example: WRITE THIS – Tremendous numbers of Americans headed west when gold was found in

California, causing San Francisco to increase in size from 14,000 to 220,000 in just three years. NOT

THIS – People moved out west to get gold and large towns were established.

4. Is the information correct?

Length of your essay is less important than completeness. A well written essay should consist an

introduction, the main part of the essay that answers the question, and a conclusion which is a summary of

what you have written.

1. What were some of the technological advances that took place in the United States in the first

half of the 1800s? How did they change the lives of ordinary Americans?

Lecture 10/7, chapter 92. Using the experiences of such different groups as those who migrated along the Overland

Trail, people traveling to California, and American settlers in Texas as examples, discuss the

different reasons why settlers chose to move West. What did they all have in common? What

made each of their experiences unique?

Lectures 10/9 and 10/14, chapter 11

3. Compare the Civil War with the American Revolution. Besides the fact that both were wars

fought in North American, what other similarities might there be? Were there decisions about

government that could have been made after the Revolution that might have made a civil war

 unnecessary?

Lectures 9/16 and 10/16, chapters 4 and 13

4. What roles were women expected to fill in the beginning of the 1800s? What restrictions

were put on them legally? How did their participation in the Civil War expand their

 opportunities?

Lectures 10/9 and 10/16, chapters 10 and 13,
