Course theme—comedy––and you will find materials to analyze, develop analytical research questions, explore secondary texts, and make claims that are connected to the evidence you have discovered.

In looking at comedy, we will seek to uncover what makes comedy funny. We will answer questions like: What does one need to know to understand this joke? What assumptions and social knowledge does this joke depend on? Why is this style of humor employed? We will also explore “the line”––ideas about political correctness, punching up or down, and socially aware comedy and critique.
