For this assignment we are going to look at the relevance of the Constitution and its constitutional protections in contemporary American society. First, research the history of the Right to Counsel in the United States. You may use the sources provided in this unit, as well as your text for this assignment.

Next, draft a short essay explaining the development of the Right to Counsel in the U.S. Consider the historical developments in the U.S. legal system that made it more difficult for a person to represent him or herself in a criminal case. Discuss at least three elements of this right and provide examples.

Your paper should be 3-4 pages long, double-spaced in 10-12 point font (Arial, Courier, and Times New Roman are acceptable). Submit your paper to the Dropbox by the end of Unit 7.

The viewpoint and purpose of this 3 – 4 page assignment should be clearly established and sustained. Assignment should follow the conventions of Standard American English (correct grammar, punctuation, etc.). Your writing should be well ordered, logical and unified, as well as original and insightful. Your work should display superior content, organization, style, and mechanics.
