This forum has two parts 300 words speech

Recall the two presidential speeches that were given by both President Obama and President Regan, respectively. Note that these two presidents used the Rogerian method of argumentation to not only win over those who agreed with their viewpoints, but also to win over those who held different views.

Think about a national or international issue that matters to you and write your own speech for that issue, using the Rogerian style of argumentation. How would you win over the other side? You don’t need to use citations, but please do not create statistics or ‘facts.’

Sample Rogerian Arguments

This week’s reading examines two presidential speeches. The first, President Obama’s DNC speech given in 2008, is a strong example of a Rogerian argument. As your reading explains, President Obama wanted to prove to his audience that he was the best candidate; however, he also wanted to ensure that Republican voters were not alienated by his discussion. Through his use of the Rogerian method, Obama attempted to assure all Americans, both Republican and Democrat, that he understood and respected their beliefs. President Regan did the same in his RNC acceptance speech, given in 1980. Through his speech, he tried to unify the country by showing both Republicans and Democrats that he was America’s candidate.

Writing Your Rogerian Proposal This Week

This week you will write your Rogerian essay. Please make sure to use strong, peer-reviewed sources in your essay. Also, remember that, like the two sample speeches you read this week, you must show respect to the other side of the issue. Although you are explaining both sides, you are still creating a persuasive argument. Make sure to have a specific, logical claim and academic research to prove that claim.

Week 7 Forum

After completing the reading, you have the opportunity to write your own speech. You don’t need to add research to this speech. You may write this speech using your own knowledge. Of course, it goes without saying that you cannot create facts, but don’t hesitate to be creative.
