A- Literature in general seeks to undermine authority because it challenges the norms and invokes the imagination in its quest of self assertion or definition of the identity. This is especially true for Arab heroes and heroines who are constantly searching for their true selves and the realities surrounding them and shaping their identities.

In the literary pieces that we have discussed in this course ample evidence of the intertwined realities of politics and the social psyche of the character. Love is also one of the predominant and recurring themes in the literary works of every poet and author from Qabbani, Darwish, Mahfouz, Kanfani, to Adonis, Tamer, AlMala'ika, Jubran and Mosteghanemi.

Discuss with citations the themes of Politics and love in contemporary Arabic literature.

B- In the different pieces of literature, there is a re-enactment of the west-east and traditional-modern dichotomies of values aesthetic, moral and political whether chosen or imposed. In most cases, there is an elaborate use of metaphors to illustrate these values.

Outline and discuss the use of metaphors in conveying the writer's or poet's celebration of or disappointment in the values both of past and present that seem to be resonating in the literature samples we have read.

Write a 4-5 double line page essay in addition to a brief outline.
