Read the two readings and answer the following prompt:

Briefly explain why the unclothed body can be considered a costume in ancient Greek culture. In what occasions was this costume used and what did it mean in the case of men as opposed to the case of women? 

Readings:

1. Nudity as a costume in Classical art, Bonfante 1989.

This reading tackles a defining aspect of ancient Greek culture: the prominence of the unclothed body. 

2. Semonides’ of Amorgos poem “on women”.This poem on women was written by the male author Semonides of Amorgos either in the 7th or 6th c. BC. It provides a chilling insight into the pervasive misogynism of ancient Greek culture.
