“Health disparities are preventable differences in the burden of disease, injury, violence, or opportunities to achieve optimal health that are experienced by socially disadvantaged populations” (CDC, 2015). Often, health disparities are thought to deal with ethnicity or racial differences, but there are more factors involved than just those two things like age, gender, geographical location, or disability, to name a few. Health disparities are considered to occur anywhere a difference between health outcomes exists.
The Healthy People 2030 objectives and the Sustainable Development Goals are two ambitious approaches to addressing the disparities found in vulnerable populations. In this Assignment, you will determine factors that contribute to health disparities, how culture impacts treatment in healthcare, and how the goals and objectives plan to reduce or eliminate health disparities.

To prepare for this Assignment, review the following with your Healthy People 2030 assigned health condition in mind:
· Review the definition of culture and articles relating to how culture impacts treatment in healthcare.
· The Sustainable Development Goals Report: https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/sustainable-development-goals/Links to an external site.
· Healthy People 2030 Goals: https://health.gov/healthypeople/about/healthy-people-2030-frameworkLinks to an external site.
Focus your attention on the second Overarching Goal: “Eliminate health disparities, achieve health equity, and attain health literacy to improve the health and well-being of all.”
To complete this Assignment, write a 4- to 5-page paper that addresses the following questions.
· Part 1: Social Ecological Factors and Culture
· What social ecological factors contribute to the existence of health disparities? (Examples include socioeconomics and education.)
· How might one's culture serve as a barrier to equal treatment when it comes to healthcare? Give an example. (Note: Please remember that culture is not just skin color or ethnicity. Culture can be about gender, age, generation, religion, or any other characteristic that can lead to differences in social behavior or norms.)
· Give two examples of how populations experience unequal treatment and disparity in healthcare. Provide some statistics to help illustrate this point from the CDC, the textbook, this week’s Learning Resources, or another reliable source.
· How do the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals address such health disparities?
· Part 2: Application to Healthy People 2030 Health Condition
· Discuss two to three Healthy People 2030 objectives that provide a framework for addressing health disparities, based on your Healthy People assigned health condition.
· Support your answers with statistical information about your Healthy People assigned health condition. The following are a few websites that provide a wealth of data regarding specific populations and the Healthy People 2030 assigned health condition:
· State Health Facts, Kaiser Family Foundation www.statehealthfacts.org
· Statistical Information System, World Health Organization http://www.who.int/whosis/en/Links to an external site.
· Interactive Map: AIDS in the U.S. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/aids/atlas/us.htmlLinks to an external site.

A Few Writing Tips
Work ahead and plan well. It’s never too early to start the writing process. You will likely write several drafts before you are ready to submit the “final” version.
Check your grammar and punctuation using a free program called Grammarly located on the Walden Writing Center Website or use MS Word spelling and grammar checker.
Submit a draft of your paper early on in Week 3 to a Writing Center tutor for review and suggestions.
Have a friend review it for clarity and flow.
Paraphrase information in your own words. NEVER copy and paste information directly from a source.
Only use direct quotes when the quote is really necessary or compelling. Most information should be paraphrased. Your instructor wants to “hear your voice.” Do not overuse quotes, especially in short papers.
Use supporting evidence from your text or other readings to support your rationale.
Use APA citations to credit your sources of evidence appropriately. Examples of APA citation and reference format can be found on the Walden Writing Center http://writingcenter.waldenu.edu or your APA Pocket Guide.
Be sure to submit your draft to Turnitin well before the deadline so you can revise as needed before you submit the final version.
