Week4Review.pdf

Data collection is the most enjoyable part of the research, as you will dive into the literature; you will be able to survey and interview real people that are a part of the research topic and see how the research can affect the people, positively and negatively. We must take the time to learn to become a good interviewer and how to make the most of interviews and data collection, as the raw data will become the basis for our research studies.

Annotated Bibliography The mission of research is to find out new things and add that knowledge to overall human knowledge. One of the issues that impacts doing that is there is an incredible amount of information that's already known. It would normally be wasted effort to prove a theory or develop an outcome only to be told: 'That? We already knew that.'

Most times when a researcher begins a project, the researcher won't know the extent of what's already known, and that is the purpose for the Annotated Bibliography. The Annotated Bibliography is a component of research that has the purpose of establishing the starting point for your project by describing all the research that has been accomplished to date on your topic. This is then used as a springboard so that your project can explore new territory. Probably in a majority of doctoral work, the Annotated Bibliography process can take as long or longer than the experimentation process. This is particularly the case if the research is archival - then a great majority of time and effort is spent reviewing the literature.

One of the tasks in creating the Annotated Bibliography is establishing the credibility of sources. In rough order of credibility, or acceptability by other academic researchers, the precedence would be:

1. Refereed journal articles. 2. Books and articles written by qualified researchers. 3. Government and other official reports. 4. News articles from credible organizations. Examples of credible would include PBS and NPR, due to their non-profit affiliation. Not credible would include CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC. Caution must be used in the credibility of all news sources, as they are now classified under entertainment in most of their parent companies. Least credible information that should never be used in any circumstance are quotations from politicians or political appointees. 5. Wikipedia-type information. Wikipedia is sometimes ok to use for basic background information or for finding credible sources that are cited within some of the Wiki's, but should not be used as academic analysis. 6. Blogs, tweets, websites, etc. developed by the public.

To accomplish the Annotated Bibliography, begin by searching through academic and public databases and making a preliminary list of sources that might add value to your research. Then do a very quick credibility check - it's not difficult to identify those sources that would not be acceptable in research - do the check quickly and discard them quickly. The read what you have remaining. If it appears you have captured what's known about the topic, then proceed to write an analysis of each source, giving the author, title, citation (date), a summary of the resource, and YOUR summary of the projected value of the resource. Once you've done this for all the resources, write a summary that explains briefly what is known, points out what is not known, and explains how your research will proceed from there into the unknown and add new knowledge.
